Michigan Touring Arts
(an abbreviated excerpt from the Touring Arts Directory)

Touring program grants are awarded annually by Michigan Humanities Council to assist nonprofit organizations, schools, colleges and other cultural groups hosting presentations listed in the directory.

An application form and guidelines for grant funds to help support listed performers' and interpreters' programs are provided at this site for nonprofits' use. It may be downloaded, completed and printed out for mailing.

Two grant categories are available: For program fees and expenses of $725 or less, an organization may apply for a grant of up to $250; for program fees and expenses that exceed $725, an organization may apply for a grant of up to 35 percent of those costs. Requests for grants may not exceed $3,000 per application, and an organization may not request more than $6,000 in a fiscal year.

Please note the following change in application procedures:

The Touring Program will offer two grant periods during the fiscal year (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30). The total annual funds allocated for Touring Program grants will be divided equally between the two granting periods.

Applications will be accepted from Aug. 15 through the postmark closing date of Sept. 25 for programs scheduled Oct. 1 through March 31. (For programs scheduled in October, applicants will be notified of grant status by Sept. 26; for programs scheduled November through March, applicants will be notified by Oct. 15.)

Applications will be accepted from Feb. 15 through postmark closing date of March 25 for programs scheduled April 1 through Sept. 30. (For programs scheduled in April, applicants will be notified of grant status by March 26; for programs scheduled May through September, applicants will be notified by April 15.)

In fiscal year 1999-2000, the program invested more than $125,000 in support of about 650 arts and cultural programs reaching 52 of the state's 83 counties. Of the 52 counties, 41 percent were considered "underserved" -- areas that have limited access to arts and cultural programs, services, or resources primarily because of location, economic condition and/or cultural background.

Schools, organizations or other nonprofit groups with questions or needing help to complete the application may contact Michigan Humanities Council via e-mail at
mihum@voyager.net or call 1-800-837-4532.
